چکیده

This work presents explorations in the microstructure of natural vision systems based on large scale computer simulations. Similarly to previous work in this area, we compute the functional inner products of a two-dimensional input signal (image) with a set of two-dimensional Gabor functions which have been shown to t the receptive elds of simple cells in the primary visual cortex of mammals. These inner products are then considered as net inputs to the cortical cells and used to compute the cell activations as non-linear functions. A previously used model is extended with a pixel-wise winner-takes-all competition between diierent Gabor lters which is introduced in order to model lateral inhibition between cortical cells. The eeect of lateral inhibition is qualitatively estimated by visualization of computed cortical images and quantitatively evaluated by applying the model to a face recognition problem. Recognition rate of 97% was achieved on a database of 205 face images of 30 persons vs. 94% achieved with a previously used model.

Interacting Cortical Filters for Object Recognition

It is shown how cortical lters can be used for image analysis and object recognition. Similarly to previous work in this area, we compute functional inner products of a two-dimensional input signal (image) with a set of two-dimensional Gabor functions which t the receptive elds of simple cells in the primary visual cortex of mammals. We propose a method in which these inner products become the ...

A Lateral Look at Olfactory Bulb Lateral Inhibition

Contrast enhancement in sensory systems often relies on spatial filters implemented by lateral inhibition. However, in this issue of Neuron, Fantana et al. provide evidence that lateral inhibition in the olfactory bulb selectively acts between sparse populations of principal neurons without regard to spatial relations.

Dual Inhibitory Mechanisms for Definition of Receptive Field Characteristics in a Cat Striate Cortex

In single cells of the cat striate cortex, lateral inhibition across orientation and/or spatial frequency is found to enhance pre-existing biases. A contrast-dependent but spatially non-selective inhibitory component is also found. Stimulation with ascending and descending contrasts reveals the latter as a response hysteresis that is sensitive, powerful and rapid, suggesting that it is active i...

CORTICAL ORIENTATION MAP DEVELOPMENT FROM NATURAL IMAGES: THE ROLE OF CORTICAL RESPONSE AMPLIFICATION IN V1 CHRISTIAN PIEPENBROCK and KLAUS OBERMAYER

Simple cells in the primary visual cortex respond selectively to oriented stimuli. It has been proposed that such feature detecting neurons should generate a sparse representation of the visual world and orientation selective receptive fields are in this sense optimal spatial filters for “natural” visual environments. In this contribution we show that a competitive Hebbian development model dri...

Spatial, temporal and spectral pre-processing for colour vision.

Fourier transforms of the spectral radiance of natural objects were investigated. The average spectral power spectrum Sc(fc) is well described by Sc(fc) = exp (-beta fc), with fc the spectral frequency (cycles micron-1), and beta = 0.419 +/- 0.097 microns. Average spectral contrast (Cc = [epsilon fc not equal to 0 Sc(fc)/Sc(0)]1/2) was 0.224 +/- 0.127. Optimal filters for colour pre-processing ...
